Previous Latin teacher Miss Barnett resigned two days before the start of this school year, leaving this year’s Bloomington North’s Latin students without a course or teacher.
Miss Strole is the current long term permanent substitute for Latin two and three. While Miss Strole is trying her best she doesn’t know the language. Strole said, “It has been an adventure already. Prior to my coming here on Monday (the 17th) I did a lot of research over the weekend… I did a little research of my own… and was able to get a good idea of what to expect. Me being a language art teacher, that’s my license, I knew the history of our english language and also a lot of other languages are formed by latin right,” she continued. “But I do not understand all of the nuances that go into it. So that is again something that’s interesting because that puts me at the same level as the students, but together we’re going to get through this until a licensed Latin teacher is there.”
Miss Strole has been able to find resources from Bloomington South’s Latin teacher and is doing her best to give Latin students work to do with Latin. She’s even got a hold of Miss Barnett’s canvas pages and is doing what she can.
Despite Miss Strole’s work the assignments are difficult with no instructions from a Latin teacher or any prior discussion. Latin students have been using each other, the web, latin dictionaries and any resources they can find to help them along the way.
Here’s a run down of what’s been done and what is currently being put in place to fix the issue. At the beginning of the year Mr. Stark was having trouble finding any candidate to replace the Latin teacher. He wanted an in person teacher as his first option but due to the difficulties Mr. Stark was leaning towards an online course and even finding difficulties with that. Most of the candidates he found fell through but he finally found a teacher. That potential teacher is currently being vetted to become the permanent teacher. Mr Stark said if all goes well “that should be starting soon. Probably next week at some point.”
