Under the leadership of 1st-year head coach Anthony Lindsey, the Cougars are sitting pretty at 6-1 with a win over South a few weeks ago and an undefeated record on home turf. Averaging 35 points a game, North currently stands 2nd in Conference Indiana with 2 regular season matchups remaining.
At the forefront of North’s dynamic offense is starting quarterback Dash King has 12 rushing touchdowns as well as 4 passing touchdowns so far. Wide receiver Jorian Brooks has 3 receiving touchdowns and is averaging 47.6 receiving yards per game. Defensively, Will Breedlove is averaging 8.9 tackles per game, most on the team. This year, the team has been focusing more on the ground game. Coach Lindsey said to the Herald Times, “It’s a physicality game. Who’s going to be the more physical team? Our mindset has always been to run the ball. And this is the game plan because that’s what it leads us to.”
With two remaining regular season games–an away matchup against the 6-1 Columbus North Bulldogs and a home game against the winless Southport Cardinals, the team hopes to finish strong. The Cougars will be looking to build momentum even more with sectionals for Indiana 5A beginning on November 1st. The sectional draw, or pairings show, is on October 13th at 6 PM and will be livestreamed exclusively on IHSAAtv.org.
Already clinching a 4th straight winning season following the first 9-0 regular season in program history, the Cougars hope to fare better in the postseason this year after an early exit via South last October. Coach Lindsey explained, “We have grown a lot as a football team from the beginning of the season. The players have bought into a new offensive system and we are playing and winning as a TEAM. We are looking forward to defending our Conference Indiana title against a really good 6A program in Columbus North this Friday. Our goals are to continue to improve with these last couple of games, stay as healthy as possible, and we want to be playing our best football in November so we can win trophies during the postseason.”
