This year ARcTic Amble helps support all of the art students at North and will take place on Saturday, February 10.
The ARcTic Amble is a fundraiser that the art department does each year to raise money. With the money that is raised the art department is able to buy supplies for the classroom. The fundraiser is a walk-a-thon style where students can walk around the North track to raise money.
North puts a little twist on it though having participants dressing up in all sorts of different wacky things. For example, last year Mr. Allanson carried a log all the way around the track. Students ask for donations from people in the community, for each lap they walk they are able to raise money. Along with the walk-a-thon North also sells t-shirts for the event. This year’s t-shirt design was done by Henrik Gong.
All the money that is donated from the event goes to the art department in the BHSN.
The fundraiser started a year ago, when Mr. Allanson had an idea to change the art department’s fundraiser, from selling cheese and
sausage into something new. “Last year was our first time doing it. Mr. Allanson, I remember ran
into my room, and was like I have an idea,” said Ms. Selke. “Then we all talked in our PLC meeting about switching.”
Switching from sausage and cheese to ARcTic Amble seemed to be a good decision. The art department was able to get donations and the event is occurring again this year for a second time.
Some of the programs that are available to students that are interested in the arts are: ceramics, drawing, jewelry, photography and many more.
“Art helps me relax and connect with new people,” says Audrey Burton, a student in fiber-arts.
With the money donated from the event the school is able to fund the arts and help so many more kids express themselves.
Something really cool about the art department’s fundraiser is that with the money raised it goes straight back towards the art students at
North. The donations buy all types of new supplies that the school wouldn’t be able to provide otherwise. All of the donations from last year’s Arctic Amble were able to supply the department with 5 new cameras for the photography students. They were also able to get alcohol markers for students in drawing classes. This year with the money raised the art department is planning to buy a heat press. That way the school will be able to make their own t-shirts.
ARcTic Amble is something truly special that North does in order to support the arts. The event is on Saturday, February 10th from 10 a.m.
to noon at the North track. Students are encouraged to wear all sorts of fun things for the walk-a-thon. At the event there will also be food and art for sale. Any North student can participate or just come to watch. The more people the better, hope to see you there!
